Pastor Phil McCutchen

Do you trust the power of C. A. L. M. ?

C. A. L. M. = The Campaign Against Living Miserably.

In the Sunday sermon I talked about how emotions like sadness, irritation, feeling offended or disrespected, rage and even guilt, are addictive.  This is because our brains are hardwired to chemically capture and reproduce highly aroused states.  We may see negativity as “being ourselves” but it’s actually just being a feeling.  By the way emotionally healthy people have negative emotions; but not habitually or continuously.  (I am not talking here about clinical depression & other diagnosible disorders)

Another addiction to powerful and dark emotions is because of the power they give us over others.  There are always people in our social circle who scurry around to make us happy if we act sad; apologize if we act offended; give in if we act enraged; tiptoe around us if we act irritated and indulge us if we act guilt ridden. To trust that everything will be okay when you go around transmitting joy, peace and contentment is to trust God.

Now I don’t think we necessarily know we are being controlling when we are constantly negative, but ignorance is neither bliss nor blessed.  In Hosea 4:6 God said, “My people are destroyed because they have no knowledge…”

I have a challenge for us all; commit to thirty days of communicating joy, peace and contentment.  See if you don’t love your life more.  It’s time to join the C. A. L. M. revolution.
