Give the ball to God

“With Him are wisdom and might; To Him belong counsel and understanding” (Job 12:13).

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable (Isaiah 40:28).

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! Romans 11:33; see also Job 9:1-4; 36:5; Isaiah 31:1-2).

I love the story of the time the Celtics were a point behind in a playoff game and Coach Casey Jones called the players to huddle on the sidelines.  The legendary Larry Bird shouted, “give the ball to me!” Coach Jones responded, “shut up, I am the coach;” then he paused, “ok everybody, give the ball to Larry.”  That kind of describes my relationship with God; not that I am saying God is a mere player on my team, that’s not the point. My point is that even though God has given me autonomy over my own life, I have learned that to seriously question His directives and His solutions is a formula for losing.  Sure, I’m still going to say, “My decisions are mine,” but if I have any sense, I am going to follow that with, “God please tell me what to do.”

I am absolutely amazed at how society keeps taking the ball away from the all wise God and then not admitting when they were completely wrong.  It makes me smile when I see how culture mocks God then acts out what God said, albeit sometimes in a tribal and destructive manner.

  • Remember when the wisdom on the street was that “there is no absolute truth. Your truth is your truth and my truth is my truth.”
  • Remember when the wisdom of the street was that “if you tell someone they’re wrong you’re trying to impose your values on them and that’s judgmentalism.”
  • Remember when the wisdom on the street was that “there is no right or wrong and everything is beautiful in it’s own way.”

I guess we all found out that behavior has consequences and we humans are all swimming in the same moral and emotional river; someone else is always downstream from my words and actions.  Now, I don’t like much about the current callout culture because good people’s careers are being destroyed by a mere stupid Tweet, but I am gratified that the wisdom of God is being proven right.  As a culture we are saying, “racism is wrong, speaking with hate is wrong, using power to oppress is wrong and using speech irresponsibly is wrong.” Well, what happened to, “you’re trying to impose your values on someone else,“ and “your truth is your truth?”  I know exactly what happened. We found out it was impossible to live consistently opposite the principles that God has embedded in the consciousness of humanity and into all of nature. The Bible says, “we (all humans, not just the religious people) live and move in him, can’t get away from him! One of your poets said it well: ‘We’re the God-created.’”  Acts 17:28  So why don’t we just stop the craziness, open our Bibles with our friends and relearn to the ancient wisdom.  I just can’t think of one moral, emotional or spiritual matter where God has not been proven right over and over again.  So even if you don’t consider yourself religious, you might as well raise the white flag, surrender and give the ball to God.
